Volunteer NOLA: Animal Lovers Edition

by admin on June 29, 2016

We all know that summer in New Orleans means volunteering to make this city a better place. For all those animal lovers out there, take a look at our recommendations to volunteer with animals this summer.

Audubon Nature InstituteThe Audubon Nature tortoiseInstitute is a non-profit organization that operates ten museums and parks dedicated to nature. Opportunities to volunteer with one of Audubon’s facilities include serving and engaging their guests, helping with horticulture in their lush parks and gardens, providing educational chats and animal encounters, assisting with animal husbandry behind the scenes, and more. Become a Naturalist and interpret exhibits, give presentations, and engage with guests at the zoo, aquarium, butterfly garden, or insectarium. Check out their volunteers page to learn more about the requirements for volunteering in each category.

Villalobos Rescue Center – Villalobos Rescue Center is a rescue, rehabilitation, and placement facility for abused and abandoned pit bulls. They have a daily average of about 150 dogs and even have their own TV show on Animal Planet! Visit the rescue center and walk one of their pit bulls during their scheduled opportunities.

Humane SocietyThe Humane Society prevents anihumanemal cruelty in New Orleans, enforces laws that protect animals, promotes responsible pet ownership, and places adoptable animals into responsible homes. They have volunteer opportunities in a variety of areas including field investigation of animal cruelty complaints, organizing fundraising programs, rescuing wildlife across Southeast Louisiana, and taking care of their sheltered animals. All volunteer opportunities require training. You can also foster an animal for a period of time to help them redevelop normal habits and prepare them for permanent adoption.
